Debuting in January 1972 as part of EMD’s Dash-2 line, the SD40-2 earned a reputation for reliability and versatility and became the best-selling locomotive in EMD’s history. This model captures that legacy with roughly 3,000 horsepower and a faithful replica of the prototype’s scale details, letting hobbyists recreate authentic diesel power on their layout.

Designed for realistic operation, the model features detailed prototypical touches such as flexible MU hoses, see-through cab windows, fine-scale handrails, photo-etch wipers, and a detailed fuel tank with gauges. It rides on a heavy die-cast frame with an all-wheel-drive drivetrain and a 5-pole motor for smooth, quiet performance, while RP25 wheels ensure reliable tracking on common HO track. Lighting includes bi-directional LED headlights with ditch lights and beacons where applicable, and McHenry scale knuckle couplers add authentic coupling. There are two variants: a DCC-ready non-sound version with a 21-pin NEM plug, and a sound-equipped model with an onboard DCC decoder and SoundTraxx Econami; on DC power some functions may be limited, while DCC operation provides full NMRA-compatible control. The model arrives fully assembled and ready to run, with packaging designed for safe storage; minimum radius is 18 inches, with 22 inches recommended for best operation.
