N ATH 57' FGE Mechanical Reefer, FGCX #12471 (ATH-1475)
This 57-foot smooth-side mechanical reefer is a ready-to-run freight car model designed to reproduce mid-century refrigerated service on a layout. Scaled from prototype drawings and field measurements, it captures both the look and the function of postwar mechanical refrigeration, letting you model how perishables moved across the country with authentic detail.
Underframe detail includes Keystone cushioning, an air brake reservoir, a control valve, brake cylinder, and a fuel tank, while two exhaust-stack stylesâ€â€straight pipe with a flapper or a T-shaped smokejackâ€â€provide era-accurate variation. The car rides on 100-ton roller-bearing trucks with 36-inch machined metal wheels and uses body-mounted McHenry knuckle couplers, designed for reliable operation on Code 55 and 80 rails. It arrives fully assembled, accurately painted and printed, and weighted for smooth running. Sound-equipped versions feature onboard sounds recorded from a real reefer unit, with the sound cycling on and off and volume adjustable. A “Primed for grime†variant offers a faded base look ready for weathering with grime and rust. Historically, these reefers were a key postwar innovation that expanded refrigerated freight, with many built for Fruit Growers Express at Jacksonville Shops as 57-foot mechanical reefers like this one.
