N ATH 57' FGE Mechanical Reefer with Sound (ATH-1492)

An N-scale 57-foot FGE mechanical reefer with sound, this ready-to-run model reproduces a mid-century mechanical refrigerator car used to haul perishables across the country. Scaled from prototype drawings and field measurements, it features authentic underframe detail—including Keystone cushioning, air brake reservoir, control valve, brake cylinder, and fuel tank—along with accurate paint and printing. Available with onboard SoundTraxx sound, it delivers lifelike operation on a layout.

On the rails, the car rides on 100-ton roller bearing trucks with 36-inch machined metal wheels that run on Code 55 and 80 rail. It uses body-mounted McHenry operating knuckle couplers and is fully assembled and weighted for reliable handling. Two exhaust-stack styles—straight pipe with a flapper and the T-shaped “smokejack”—mirror the prototype and era. The highly detailed injection-molded body, a minimum radius of 9¾ inches (11 inches recommended), and a grime-ready variant provide a convincing, ready-to-run centerpiece for freight consists. The grime-ready option duplicates the worn, in-service look with faded base colors to simplify weathering and rust effects.
