57-foot FGE Mechanical Reefer with Sound is a ready-to-run freight-car model designed for model railroading. Scaled from prototype drawings and field measurements, it captures a postwar mechanical refrigeration car in meticulous detail, with an authentic underframe that includes Keystone cushioning, an air-brake reservoir, control valve, brake cylinder, and fuel tank. Two exhaust-stack options—straight pipe with a flapper or a T-shaped smokejack—are included, along with body-mounted McHenry operating knuckle couplers. The car rides on 100-ton roller-bearing trucks with 36-inch machined metal wheels that run on all Code 55 and 80 rail, and arrives fully assembled, accurately painted and printed, with a weighty, injection-molded body for reliable operation. Minimum radius is 9¾ inches, with 11 inches recommended for best performance.

Sound-equipped models offer onboard SoundTraxx sound, with audio recorded from an actual reefer and programmed to cycle on and off using minimal track power; volume is adjustable on the sound board. For a weathered, in-service look, primed-for-grime variants duplicate the faded base colors seen in prototype equipment and provide an ideal starting point for adding grime and rust. Prototypically, Fruit Growers Express owned the largest reefers fleet in the East, with many cars built at Jacksonville Shops, including these 57-foot smooth-side mechanical reefers.
