HO 50' FMC 5347 DD Offset Box Car GWF #1179 (ATH-1747)

HO-scale 50-foot FMC DD Offset Box Car, road number GWF 1179, is a detailed model of a 1970s-era Food Machinery Corporation design used for per diem service. It features a newly tooled body with road-specific doors, separately applied grab irons, end ladders and a brake wheel, plus a photo-etched cross-over platform. A full underbody brake detail with piping, a weighted chassis, and 33" machined metal wheels with RP25 contours help deliver realistic operation on HO layouts. Body-mounted McHenry operating scale knuckle couplers, along with authentic painting and printing, enhance the overall realism, and the model is designed to run on radii as small as 18 inches.

The model is offered with weathering-ready potential in mind, featuring the “Primed for grime” look that mirrors in-service equipment with faded base colors matched to the prototype, making it a great starting point for adding grime and rust. The prototype history notes that the mid-1970s saw a boom in per diem box cars, and FMC-built 50-foot cars varied in door configuration to suit different customers; these designs still appear on today’s railroads, giving this HO model a strong sense of authenticity for dioramas and on-layout operations.
