HO 50' Youngstown Plug Door Box Car (ATH-2057)

HO-scale 50-foot Youngstown insulated plug-door box car is a finely detailed model designed for realistic freight operations on HO layouts. Recreating mid-century insulated service, it features plug doors that slide to seal the car, preserving temperature-sensitive loads during transit and delivering authentic operation in a prototypical setting.

Equipped with separately applied brake wheel and ladders, 70-ton roller bearing trucks, 33-inch machined metal wheels with RP25 contours, and a weighted body for optimum performance, the car also uses body-mounted McHenry operating scale knuckle couplers for reliable, prototypical coupling with other equipment. The injection-molded body is highly detailed, painted and printed for realistic decoration, and offered in representative prototype paint schemes; minimum radius is 18 inches, ensuring smooth operation on most HO layouts. In prototype terms, insulated boxcars of this type—about 50 feet long—were common in the 1950s and were used to seal cargo from temperature extremes, protecting perishables such as canned foods during transit.
