Fruehauf Corporation was known for building semi-trailers designed for intermodal service during the 1970s and 1980s. Specifically, the Z-Van equipment was engineered for durability to endure both road and rail travel. Originally, the Z-van trailer was available in a 40-foot length, with later offerings including a 45-foot version. Many of the 40-foot trailers were extended to 45 feet. Various configurations, including refrigeration equipment, landing gear, and door rods, were available. The construction evolved from ribbed-side versions to beaded-side construction, culminating in the smooth side version that represents modern design. The Athearn model reflects this with three distinct body styles, making it a realistic addition to road or rail scenes from the 1970s through the 2000s.
