HO RTR SD40T-2 Southern Pacific 1990s Locomotive #8314 (ATH72065)

HO scale Southern Pacific SD40T-2 tunnel-motor locomotive in the 1990s SP livery, road number 8314, is a ready-to-run replica designed for SP-era layouts. This six-axle diesel-electric captures the distinctive tunnel-motor design with rear radiator intakes and era-appropriate nose and cab details. The SD40T-2 family delivered about 3,000 horsepower from the EMD 645E3 engine and was built between 1974 and 1980, earning the tunnel-motor nickname for its cooling system suited to tunnel service. This model brings that heritage to life in a faithful, plug-and-play package for modern HO layouts.

More than just a looker, the locomotive is built for authentic operation on today’s rails. It features fine-scale handrails, separately applied air tanks, see-through cab windows, photo-etched windshield wipers, and LED lighting, all driven by a smooth all-wheel-drive drivetrain and a 5-pole motor with flywheels for quiet performance. It’s DCC-ready with a 21-pin NEM plug, rides on RP25-contoured wheels with nickel plating, and uses McHenry scale knuckle couplers for realistic coupling. Fully assembled and ready to run, it also offers a “Prime for Grime” finish option with faded base colors and road-number-specific patches to evoke an in-service look. The model is designed for HO layouts with a minimum 22-inch radius, and replacement parts (including motor brushes) are available if needed.
