An HO-scale SD40 Locomotive is a highly detailed representation of EMD’s SD40 diesel, a 3,000-horsepower turbocharged V16 that powered American railroads for decades. This model is designed for model railroaders seeking an authentic, ready-to-run locomotive to enrich their layout. It features LED lighting, photo-etched stainless steel windshield wipers, separately applied wire grab irons and air tanks, curved radiator fan grab irons, and coupler cut levers; see-through cab windows, dynamic brake and radiator fans, fine-scale handrails, an exhaust stack, and a frame-mounted bell. A 4,000-gallon fuel tank, Flexicoil-C trucks with variable brake cylinders, and McHenry scale knuckle couplers compatible with Kadee add to the realism, while all-wheel drive and all-wheel electrical pickup deliver smooth, reliable operation. DCC-ready Quick Plug plug-and-play support via a 21-pin NEM connector, along with a robust five-pole skew-wound motor with flywheels and RP25-contoured wheels, ensures smooth performance on most popular tracks. Minimum radius is 18 inches, with 22 inches recommended for best results on tighter curves.

Sound-enabled versions add an onboard DCC decoder with SoundTraxx Econami sound, a single cube speaker for clear audio, and operation that works in both DC and DCC modes. Engine, horn, and bell sounds are active in DC, while all functions are NMRA-compatible in DCC. The sound package supports excellent low-speed operation and enables programming of multiple-unit lashups with a lead unit’s horn, bell, and lights; many features can be adjusted via CV changes, with a CV chart included in the box.
