Equipped with a removable load, separately applied wire grab irons and brake wheel, and solid nickel-silver wheels with RP25 contours, it is weighted for smooth, dependable operation and uses body-mounted McHenry operating scale knuckle couplers. The injection-molded body is highly detailed and finished with painted and printed decoration for lifelike appearance, and it runs on HO track with an 18-inch minimum radius. In prototype service, ballast hoppers haul loose bulk materials such as ballast for track beds, coal, ore, and grain, and open-top designs are typical for bulk loads—this model represents that classic ballast-hopper configuration on HO layouts.
