HO Auto-Max Carrier (ATH96244)

HO Auto-Max Carrier is a detailed HO-scale model of Gunderson’s Auto-Max articulated auto rack car, designed for intermodal and freight scenes on HO layouts. In prototype form, the Auto-Max carries up to 22 SUVs on three internal ramps and measures over 140 feet long and about 20 feet tall from the rail, making it a dramatic centerpiece in modern railroading.

This model captures the car’s rugged realism with separately applied ladders, brake rigging, stirrups, and handbrake details, a simulated corrugated roof, and full articulation through a flexible diaphragm. It rides on 70-ton roller bearing trucks with 33-inch machined metal wheels featuring RP25 contours and is weighted for smooth operation. Body-mounted McHenry operating scale knuckle couplers provide authentic handling, while a highly detailed injection-molded body is painted and printed for realistic decoration. The minimum radius is 22 inches, ensuring reliable performance on standard HO layouts. The Auto-Max concept—first introduced by Gunderson in 1999—sought to transport up to 22 SUVs on three internal ramps, a hallmark of modern intermodal capability.
