HO GEN 57' FGE Mechanical Reefer (ATHG-1116)

HO-scale 57-foot smooth-side mechanical reefer from Fruit Growers Express is a ready-to-run model that reproduces a postwar mechanical refrigerator car used to haul perishables across the railroad network. Based on prototype drawings and field measurements, this detailed model captures authentic proportions and period styling—from see-through protective end screens and end platforms to visible end-wall corrugation and an inner bulkhead. Repaints often vary by road number in the size and style of the reporting marks, car numbers, and patch shapes, adding realism when building a diverse roster on an HO layout.

Under the hood, the car features full underframe detail including Keystone cushioning, air brake reservoir, control valve, brake cylinder and plumbing, plus factory-applied end ladders and door-closure rods. It rides on 100-ton roller bearing trucks with rotating bearing caps and machined metal RP25 wheels, and is weighted for smooth operation on HO layouts with a minimum radius of 18 inches (22 inches recommended). Sound-equipped versions feature onboard SoundTraxx sound recorded from an actual reefer unit that can cycle on and off, with volume adjustable on the sound board. Prototype accuracy continues with two exhaust-stack options (straight pipe with flapper or T-shaped smokejack), see-through end screens and end platforms, end-wall corrugation visible inside, trainline hoses with silver ends, three different coupler cut-lever styles, and compatibility with either body-mounted or truck-mounted brakes and McHenry scale-knuckle couplers. A grime-ready variant duplicates the faded base color of in-service equipment, providing a natural starting point for adding grime, rust, and weathering for added realism.
