Santa Fe GP39-2u Locomotive – ATSF 3409 is an HO-scale, highly detailed model that recreates Santa Fe’s mid-1980s GP39-2 upgrade to the GP39-2u. It captures the Phase 1 body with distinctive grilles (chickenwire on 3409/3415 and corrugated on 3418), a rear-mounted fuel tank, swing-out number boards, a newly tooled exhaust stack, and switcher-style walkway steps. Road-number variants include 3409, 3415, and 3418, each reflecting prototype differences such as horn choice (Leslie 3-chime on 3409/3415, Nathan 3-chime on 3418) and an access door behind the cab, making it well suited for authentic Santa Fe yard or mainline scenes.

Under the hood, the GP39-2u features a Genesis driveline with a 5-pole skew-wound motor, precision flywheels, and a multi-link drivetrain for smooth, quiet operation and solid pulling power. A heavy die-cast frame, RP25 wheel contours, see-through cab windows, and body-mounted scale knuckle couplers (Kadee-compatible) enhance realism and usability on HO layouts. The model is DCC-ready with Quick Plug technology and a 21-pin NEM connector, and sound-equipped versions offer onboard Tsunami2 sound with dual speakers that operate in both DC and DCC. It’s also primed for grime weathering, providing a natural starting point to add authentic wear and patina to match the prototype.
