An HO-scale NSC 6400 Gondola from the Athearn Genesis line, this model faithfully recreates National Steel Car’s large 6400-cubic-foot open-top gondolas used in scrap-metal service. The design captures the sturdy, open-top profile with fixed sides and ends and a solid bottom, giving it a convincing presence on modern HO layouts and a reliable anchor for long freight runs.

Across nine build variations spanning 2006 to the present, the model reproduces multiple body styles, end configurations, top-chord options, and ladder arrangements to reflect the prototype’s diversity. Fine detailing includes metal grab irons, etched crossover platforms, and precise brake piping in metal and plastic components. Genesis roller bearing trucks with animated bearing caps, NMRA-weighted chassis, and body-mounted McHenry lower-shelf couplers help deliver realistic operation and durability. The gondola is designed to run on HO layouts with a minimum radius of 22 inches and a recommended 24 inches, making it suitable for solo operation or as part of larger NSC gondola consists.
