HO 4-6-6-4 Union Pacific #3985 Modern Steam Locomotive (ATHG97971)

HO-scale Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 Challenger in a modern excursion configuration, UP 3985, designed for realistic HO model railroading. This version recreates UP’s Challenger in its late-20th-century excursion form, powered by an oil burner, and offers a convincing centerpiece for mainline-style layouts from the 1980s to the 2000s.

Highlights include illuminated number boards and headlights, a reverse-off headlight, and a tender back-up light, plus pivoting front and rear engines to handle 18-inch-radius curves. The locomotive features detailed cab and boiler work, current pickup on all wheels, and a full suite of authentic sounds with a tender-mounted DCC decoder and SoundTraxx Tsunami2 for DC and DCC operation. New features add dual cube speakers for richer sound, a flickering see-through-firebox effect, brighter LED lighting, and an upgraded loco-to-tender harness. Additional detailing includes individually applied parts such as brass-painted bell and whistle, piping, valves, generator, steps, air pump, air tanks, reverser and coupler lift bar, and a front coupler pocket for an operating coupler. The model carries a 22-inch minimum curve radius for smooth operation on most HO layouts.
