An HO-scale model of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Challenger #3803, a 4-6-6-4 steam locomotive built for wartime service and reproduced to Union Pacific specifications. This coal-burner with dual smokestacks delivers a historically authentic centerpiece for HO layouts, capturing the power and presence of the era in a compact, highly detailed model.

Illuminated number boards and headlights, a reverse light, and a detailed backhead with printed gauges bring the locomotive to life, while features like adjustable cab vents, cab windows, and pivoting front and rear engines let it negotiate tight 18-inch curves on your layout. Current pickup on all driving wheels helps ensure smooth operation, and the boiler area is richly detailed with brass-painted accents and carefully applied piping and fittings. New features include dual cube speakers for clearer sound, a see-through firebox with a flicker effect, and a brighter LED headlight, plus a more durable loco-to-tender connection harness. For sound enthusiasts, a tender-mounted DCC decoder with SoundTraxx Tsunami2 supports both DC and DCC operation with full functions, including engine, whistle, bell, chuff, blow-down, air compressor, dyno, and pop-off valve sounds, all programmable via CVs (a CV chart is included). The Challenger’s prototype heritage—two engines under one boiler—speaks to its purpose for higher-speed main-line service and occasional passenger duties, and the model is designed for a minimum 22-inch HO curve radius.
