N NSC 6400 Gondola with Load, OFOX #1729 (ATHGN12583)

NSC 6400 Gondola with Load is an HO-scale freight car modeled after National Steel Car’s 6,400 cubic-foot capacity gondola, realized in the Athearn Genesis line. Designed for modern-era layouts, it includes a removable scrap load and a host of scale details that bring scenes to life, such as separately applied metal grab irons, etched crossover platforms, authentic brake piping, bent-wire coupler cut levers, and rubber train-line hoses. It rides on screw-mounted 100-ton roller-bearing trucks with body-mounted McHenry lower-shelf knuckle couplers, and features machined metal wheels with RP25 contours. The injection-molded body is highly detailed and finished with prototypical paint and printing, and the whole model is weighted for stable operation on most HO track brands. Minimum radius is 11 inches, with 15 inches recommended for smoother curves.

To capture the prototype, the model reproduces variations seen on NSC’s 6,400 cu ft gondolas, including multiple top chords and end configurations, along with full brake rigging and other underbody details. It’s designed to work on common HO-brand track, making it a natural addition to a modern roster, yard, or interchange scene. The removable load supports realistic loading and unloading visuals, while the robust construction and precise detailing help deliver a convincing, durable model for serious scale modeling.
