N FCA VersaCoil Gondola CPR #334086 (ATHGN13747)

The VersaCoil Gondola is an N-scale coil-car model designed to haul coils of various sizes in a transverse trough, a design that streamlines loading and protects coil edges from movement. The Canadian Pacific version uses Phase 1 body styling and ships without a hood, while other Phase 2 variants include removable hoods for easier access during loading and unloading. The car rides on screw-mounted 100-ton roller bearing trucks and uses body-mounted McHenry lower-shelf knuckle couplers for reliable operation. Machined metal wheels with RP25 contours, along with accurately painted and printed detailing, give the model a lifelike appearance; the injection-molded body is highly detailed, and the whole model is weighted for stable performance. It runs on most popular track brands, with a minimum radius of 11 inches and a recommended 15 inches for smooth operation.

VersaCoil cars are designed to carry coils from 30 to 72 feet in easily loaded troughs, a transverse trough design that increases efficiency and reduces edge damage compared with older coil cars. The model reproduces multiple VersaCoil configurations, including removable coils, detailed underbodies, and numerous separately applied details such as etched metal platforms, rubber train-line hoses, coupler cut levers, and metal grab irons; depending on the variant, prototype-dependent removable hoods may be included. The VersaCoil concept originated with Johnstown America Corporation (later FreightCar America), and this model captures four of the VersaCoil phases to deliver an authentic representation for N-scale layouts.
