HO Smoke PRR S1 6-4-4-6 Duplex Locomotive with Paragon4 Sound (BLI4377)
The HO Smoke model represents the PRR S1, a 6-4-4-6 duplex locomotive known for its historical significance and engineering marvel. Nicknamed 'The Big Engine', the PRR S1 was designed to showcase the benefits of a duplex drive and holds the record for being the longest and heaviest rigid-frame reciprocating steam locomotive ever constructed. With a length of 140 feet and a weight of 608,170 lbs, it was a remarkable achievement in railroad engineering.
Originally completed at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona shops in 1938, the S1 featured a streamlined design by the renowned Raymond Loewy. Its unique wheel arrangement enabled it to achieve impressive passenger train speeds. However, its size also imposed restrictions, confining its operation mostly between Chicago and Crestline, Ohio. Despite these limitations, the S1 was employed on key services such as the Broadway Limited and Liberty Limited.
This model not only reflects the historical significance of the PRR S1, but also includes meticulously crafted details. Made with a handcrafted brass boiler and die-cast chassis, it promises a robust performance. The locomotive features the Paragon4 sound system, enhancing its operational experience for modelers and collectors alike.
