The N Reading T1 4-8-4 Locomotive, In Service Version #2101 was introduced as a pivotal addition to the Reading Railroad fleet in the mid-20th century. Designed to enhance freight services during a period of transition after World War II, these locomotives were converted from existing I10-class engines. Between 1945 and 1947, 30 units of the T-1 class were produced. Initially used for freight, a subset of these locomotives was later equipped for passenger service, yet they often remained tasked primarily with freight operations.

The operational lifespan of the Reading T-1 locomotives was relatively short, with all units in storage by 1954. However, some were briefly returned to service during a traffic surge in 1955. The historical significance of the T-1s extends beyond their service years, as they participated in popular excursion services, especially during the Iron Horse Rambles. T1 #2101 gained fame after being restored for the American Freedom Train in the 1970s, eventually donning a colorful Chessie System livery.

In 2023, Broadway Limited is replicating this iconic locomotive in N scale with various production models reflecting different historical paint schemes, including the Chessie Steam Special and American Freedom Train designs. Each model will feature a DCC-ready setup, precise detailing, and the capability for future sound upgrades, ensuring a faithful representation of this important locomotive in model form.
