Rapido Trains introduces the highly anticipated Alco FA-1 and FB-1 locomotive models, continuing its commitment to capturing the beauty and authenticity of classic Alco designs. Originally built between January 1946 and October 1950, Alco and its Canadian subsidiary, Montreal Locomotive Works, produced a total of 440 FA-1s and 240 FB-1s. These locomotives, designed primarily for freight service, were equipped with a 1500-horsepower rating, making them a powerful option for railroads across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Despite stiff competition from EMD products and some reliability issues with the 244 prime mover, the FA-1 remained popular among several railroads and could still be found pulling freights well into the late 1960s. Rapido’s new HO scale FA-1/FB-1 models capture the essence of these historic locomotives, reflecting an unparalleled attention to detail that enthusiasts have come to expect.
The Rapido HO scale FA-1/FB-1 features authentic nose and windshield contours, as well as the correct number board variations—available in flat or angled styles depending on the prototype. Both dynamic and non-dynamic brake versions are offered, with precision-etched side and fan screens enhancing the realism. Built with a heavy, die-cast chassis and a 5-pole motor with dual flywheels, these models ensure smooth and reliable operation. Lighting includes fully functional headlights, class lights, and back-up lights. Additionally, full underbody piping, separate grab irons, and detailed handrails add to the highly realistic appearance of these iconic freight haulers.
