It was dedicated to bonito fishing during the summer months while during the rest of the time, it was used to catch other species or to fish in different areas following the seasonal migration of other bonito species.

The traditional fishing method employed by these boniteros involves trolling and using live bait. Live bait was captured using small fish caught by the bonitero with a small net, which were kept alive on board in nurseries. The seasonality of bonito fishing led to groups of these boniters being present in the Mediterranean, from the Strait of Gibraltar to the Alboran Sea.
